Location Guide for Family Photography in Sydney’s Northern Beaches: North Curl Curl Beach

If you’re planning a family photography session in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, North Curl Curl Beach is one of my absolute favourite spots. As a natural light family photographer, I’ve shot here during both sunrise and sunset, and the light is always soft, golden, and magical — perfect for capturing candid, heartfelt moments.

Stunning Natural Backdrops

North Curl Curl offers a wide variety of natural settings, all within walking distance. Behind the beach, you’ll find the Flora and Ritchie Roberts Reserve, filled with open grass areas and lush greenery — perfect for relaxed, lifestyle family portraits.

To the north end of the beach, there’s a beautiful rock platform and tidal rock pool. These spots offer a rugged, coastal vibe that contrasts beautifully with the soft sand and gentle waves. All of the photos below were taken at North Curl Curl — and each session looks uniquely stunning

Accessibility & Parking

One of the biggest advantages of this location is how easy it is for families with young children. There are no stairs leading to the beach or reserve, making it pram-friendly and ideal for babies, toddlers, or even beach carts (yes, I had a client transport four boys that way!).

Parking is also a breeze — with a car park just behind the beach. If you’re booking a sunrise session, there’s even a coffee cart nearby to grab a warm drink after your shoot.

Space, Light, and Crowd Control

North Curl Curl is one of the larger beaches in Sydney, stretching about 1.2km from North to South Curl Curl. The extra space makes it easier to find quiet pockets during busy times, especially on warmer weekends.

While sunset sessions on weekends can get crowded with swimmers and surfers, don’t worry — I always scout for less busy corners to ensure your family photos remain relaxed and uninterrupted
